This past week a judge in Phoenix, Arizona refused to stop an order by AZ Governor Jan Brewer that denies driver’s licenses to young Hispanic immigrants who have work permits and who have avoided deportation under President Obama’s administrative policy. The judge is US District Judge David Campell. He denied a motion from immigrant rights advocates seeking a preliminary injunction against Brewer’s order and he threw out on of their arguments. However, the advocate’s lawsuit will continue as they pursue other arguments before the court that young Hispanic immigrants suffer from unequal treatment in Arizona.
Arizona refuses to accept President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which grants immigrants brought to the US as children US citizenship. Further, Arizona refuses to accept the fact that Homeland Security has stated plainly that any immigrant with a work permit is in the US lawfully. This, of course, is not surprising as Arizona has a long history of sexism and racism. It was the last state in the union to grant women the right to vote. It was also the last state in the union to accept the Martin Luther King Holiday as an official federal and state holiday. Oh yes, Arizona can be proud of these two achievements…..NOT!
