Former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn passed away today at the age of 95 in Ohio. He was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth as well as having served as a US Senator and a US Marine Aviator. He served in WW2 and in the Korean War and saw combat action in both wars. At the age of 77 Glenn was running for his fourth Senate term in 1998 and he decided to return to space as a crew member on the space shuttle Discovery. He made history again by becoming the oldest human being in space.
John Glenn was from a type of man and national hero they don’t make anymore. After the Soviets launched the first man into space the US space program was rocked by embarrassment but John Glenn reclaimed the day by becoming the first man to orbit the planet in space.
Glenn was a national treasure from an era long ago when our nation took pride in itself and the world thought America was the greatest place in the world. In those days we had clear morals and values and we lived them daily. You could safely walk down your neighborhood street without fear of getting mugged, raped, or killed. Most people left their keys in their cars 24/7 and didn’t even bother to lock the doors of their homes when they were away. Neighbors knew each other and watched out for each other. Schools actually taught reading, writing, and arithmetic and we respected our police and government. Most of all we valued human life born or unborn. My how it’s all turned upside down now! We are living in the underbelly and it stinks to high heaven!
John Glenn was a statesman, adventurer, trail blazer, astronaut, and leader. He had a knack for listening to the common folk and getting things done as a Senator. More than that he was honest and his word was his bond. Once he gave you his word, you could count on it. Thus he was an honorable man. Sadly, today we live in a world of the dishonorable where our words mean nothing. My how we’ve changed America and NOT for the better either.
Goodbye John Glenn! We loved you and you were one of our heroes!
